Doing What You Love

Doing What You Love

Doing What You Love

Aug 5, 2023

We often hear the phrase, "Do what you love." Over time, it becomes trite due to its constant repetition. As someone who's been in the entrepreneurial game for seven years, I, like many founders, often grapple with questions. Am I on the right path? Am I making the right decisions? Am I spending my time wisely? Will I achieve my goals? On a lighter note, will I ever get rich?

Like all startups, there are triumphant days and challenging ones. Recently, I pondered about the very essence of doing what you love. We've been told that success is more likely when you're passionate about your work. But what does "love" or "care" truly mean in a business context? To answer this, I delved deep into understanding love from a personal standpoint. Here's what I discerned:

Time Investment:

Do I willingly choose my business over other opportunities? The answer is a resounding yes. I can't fathom working any other job. The term "work-life balance" often makes the rounds, but could you really tell a loved one that you need a break from them? It's intense, it's all-consuming, but isn't that what real love feels like? So, for entrepreneurs, maybe we should dub it "work-rest balance." Our brains seldom switch off from work; they merely rest in the backdrop while we engage in other activities.

Loyalty:

Do I daydream of a life distinct from my current reality? Let's face it; we've all seen a curated Instagram post and wondered, "That could've been me." But the reality? Everyone is grappling with something. Those idealized snapshots are for ratings, much like the joyous depictions in '90s sitcoms. Even though we all crave a high "rating" in life, I've pledged to earn it through genuine hard work and authenticity.

Personal Growth:

Does my work challenge me to learn and evolve? Absolutely. Entrepreneurship is an eternal lesson, encompassing everything from technology and sales to psychology and leadership. It's a rigorous tutor; if you don't learn and adapt, you might lose – and it's all on you. No passing the buck.

Visioning the Future:

Do I foresee a promising future in what I do? Interestingly, in matters of the heart, the future is seldom a prime concern. As for me, I'm optimistic about what lies ahead. Still, love isn't rooted purely in logic. You might not know what the future holds, but you're deeply invested in the present, giving your all, believing in the journey, and enjoying every moment.

In conclusion, "Do what you love" might sound clichéd, especially when spoken by those who've "made it." Hence, my advice to fellow founders is to introspect on the essence of "love." Are you ready to fully commit, to be unwaveringly loyal, to continuously evolve, and to wholeheartedly believe in the potential future? I know I am. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Warm regards,

Ersel
